The Kit Part 2

So I’ve done the shoes, what’s next?

Give me some skins.

I started out running in a $10 pair of draw-string 3/4 pants from K-mart and now I’m running in $140 pair of 3/4 compression tights from skins. Actually I’ve got 2 pairs, but I bought them on a two-for-one special so every time I freak out about how expensive they were, I just remind myself of that fact.

You need to be quite careful when you buy skins because if they’re not tight enough, you won’t experience 100% of their effects. According to the height and weight chart, I should have a small size, but after trying on the small size, I decided I’d like to be able to breathe while I run, so I bought the medium.

The medium size itself is very *snug* so I laughed when I read their sales pitch on the back of the box, “..why not pick up a second pair to wear to bed after a long run or an exhausting gym class to help you wake up refreshed and ready to do it all again!” I understand that you need them to be tight to get the blood pumping, but seriously, I couldn’t imagine wearing something to bed that would give me a worse night’s sleep – oh, wait, maybe I can…a set of armbinders and a hood.

The interesting thing about skins is that they are made of some funky material that is antibacterial and antimicrobial so washing is ‘optional’. I have to agree that they don’t smell at all. My shirts absolutely stink when I come back from a run, but you can barely smell anything on these babies. I do need to wash them though (hand-rinsing only) because I get lovely salt ‘crop circles’  from my sweat patches:

They come with a 12mth warranty that you register using the attached cd-rom and a carry bag.

Apparently if they stop being stretchy, the seams come undone, the material rips etc. during the 12mths, you get a new pair. Yay!

The first time I went running in my new shoes and tights it was totally bizarre; I felt all squeezed and cushioned at the same time. I still feel pretty damn tired after I come back from a run, but I just sort of tell myself that I’d probably feel worse if I wasn’t wearing my new gear.

Because they are so snug, I sometimes get serious vadgies that require a rearrangement of my hardware. Underwear is apparently optional with these tights (i.e. you can wear them as underwear) but the thought of direct contact with my hardware scares me so, I always wear under pants.
