TMI?

(I feel the need to discuss bodily functions in this – be warned…)

For about the last month something strange has been happening that I can only put down to the fact that I am running because it has never happened before with any sort of exercise I have done (even ridiculous amounts of aerobics and walking):

I’m pooing like a regular person!!

Number twos have always been a problem for me,  along the lines of a good week would see me off to the toilet two or three times. Bad weeks have been once a week and my record is two weeks without a bowel movement. For the last month though, I have gone just about every day and sometimes even two or three times a day!!!

I know I shouldn’t really get this excited by bowel movements, but it’s such a first for me.

I feel so….normal. Lol.

The down side to my reanimated bowel though is that now, when I need to go, I need to go quickly. Yesterday I was five kilometres from home running to the station and I felt a rumble. Then I got all crampy. Eventually I had to stop and walk while I frantically thought about possible places I could go to do my business – bushes? behind a tree? could I wipe my bum with leaves?

Fortunately after a bit of walking it settled down, so I started running again. Then 15 mins later it happened again so I stopped again. Rinse and repeat the entire 12km to the station. And when I eventually arrived at the station , the damn urge to poo had left me!

I’ve heard about marathon runners getting diarrhoea and I could understand if I was doing ultra endurance or something like that, but it’s just me out for a morning jog with nothing in my stomach (I’m not even going to chance having breakfast before I go for a run in the mornings!)  And what’s more, why is it happening now? I’ve been running for over four months now.

I haven’t really changed anything in my diet. I’m possibly drinking a bit more water now that we’re getting into summer-like weather but that’s about it. Just for your reference, it’s 11am and I’ve already pooed twice and today isn’t even a running day. It’s weird.

Curiousity got the better of me so I did some google searches and some of the horror stories out there about running and bowel movements are scary. Remind me why I’m doing this again?

  1. Hello Subtle,
I noticed similar things when I started bike riding. I’ve been looking on your site to see where you’ve mentioned what logging system for your running you use. I love all the information it gives you and would something similar for my bike riding. I probably have just read over it and not realized it, but would you mind telling me again?
    shula

  2. I use the free training log at mapmywalk.

There are several options for cycling including road racing, stationary bike and mountain riding, so you should be able to find something for your workouts 🙂

Edited several times because I can’t make links work…sorry.
